Cobalt and Lithium from Lithium-ion Batteries

The lithium battery market is constantly growing. Global demand for lithium batteries is estimated to double roughly every 5 years. Therefore, the recycling of lithium batteries and the elements they contain (copper, aluminum, lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, graphite) will be crucial in the years to come.

There are already several processes for the recovery of these materials, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical, but in Italy there are still no plants for the treatment and recovery of lithium-ion batteries which must be sent to foreign plants.

We are studying a low environmental impact process for the recovery of all these elements by improving existing processes: making the battery disassembly part more efficient and the leaching of the cathode material more environmentally friendly.
